The organization was started in 1985 in Tacoma and now numbers over 70 members from Tacoma, Seattle, Bellevue, Mercer Island, Federal Way, Bremerton, Everett, Spokane, Olympia, Gig Harbor and other Puget Sound communities. Many members are teachers and instructors who offer regular classes; members are often in community schools teaching sumi-e and sharing brush writing with students.
Membership in Puget Sound Sumi Artists (PSSA) is open to amateur and professional artists 18 years of age or older who create original works in sumi painting (sumi-e) or Asian calligraphy (shodo); and/or those interested in promoting the same in Washington State. Annual membership dues are $40, due in December.
Our members exhibit extensively throughout the region with shows from Anacortes to Olympia and everywhere in-between, including eastern Washington. PSSA. also exhibits in Japan and many members submit pieces to the national sumi-e society. While we are an active and vital group we are accepting of artists of all levels, especially beginners. If you wish more information please contact us.
The PSSA 10 monthly meetings begin at 11:00 a.m. on the first Tuesday of each month, except for July and August. Most of the meetings are held at the Asia Pacific Cultural Center, 4851 South Tacoma Way, Tacoma, Washington 98409, Tel 253-383-3900, but some meetings are in the Bellevue area. After the formal meetings we have a light lunch and a program from a guest artist.
