Sheila Scott
Artist Biography
I am a Seattle painter with a degree in fine art and design from the University of Washington in the 60’s. I’ve been drawing and painting all my life. Following a career as graphic artist, illustrator, and calligrapher in San Diego, California, I returned to Seattle. It was in 2001 that I discovered the art of sumi-e. For five years I studied shuji (Japanese calligraphy). It was a discipline that gave new life and purpose to my brush strokes in both ink and oil painting. The discipline and beauty of Asian calligraphy invited me to diligent practice and goal of ‘dancing with brush’.
My themes reflect my love of the ocean and the desert as well as more traditional subjects. The immediacy of the brushstroke and variety of effects attained with ink are endlessly fascinating to me. Exploring the beauty and infinite possibilities of sumi-e has added a delightful new dimension to my life as a painter. I am a past president of PSSA and a member since 2001. My work has shown in galleries in Washington, California, Arizona and Japan. May the images in this web sight encourage you to join us and try your creative wings!
