Our Purpose
Create and promote haiga in the northwest community and beyond.
We offer free workshops, classes, learning tools, resources and friendly support in developing both haiku and images that unite to form inspiring haiga.
Metting Times
Haiga Adventure meets on Zoom at 10:30am on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. We open the Zoom line at 10:15am for those who went to join us early. Mettings run September-June.
What is Haiga?
Haiga (hi-guh) is a Japanese art form that evolved in the 1800’s. Haiga unites poetry and visual imagery into a single work. The term comes from hai (haiku) and ga (painting). The plural of haiga is “haiga.” The plural of haiku is “haiku.”
A haiku captures a poignant moment in nature on daily life. An image juxtaposed with a haiku creating new. the image does not illustrate the poem, it complements or contrasts it, deepening the overall meaning. Haiga emphasize simplicity, subtlety, and harmony, inviting the viewer to reflect on both words and artwork together.
Traditional haiga are created with Sumi brush painting or Shodō (Japanese calligraphy). Today haiga images can also be made with watercolor, other paint mediums, photographs, collages, digital art, or fabric. The poem can be handwritten, computer generated, painted, or handstitched.
Chapbooks and other Projects
Each year we create a chapbook showcasing our members’ haiga. We often create other projects, such as the 2024 MONVIEWING booklet and the 2026 Haiga Collaboration Project, that pairs PSSA art with Haiga Adventure haiku. Recently we’ve participated in haiga exhibits at Columbia City Gallery in Seattle, the Bainbridge Island Arts and Crafts , the Handforth Gallery in Tacoma, and the Art Journey Gallery in Olympia. In addition, we showcase our work at our annual PSSA Show and Tell meeting.
Interactive Exhibits
We hold an annual display of haiga and Sumi paintings at the Haiku Northwest Seabeck Haiku Getaway in Seabeck, WA. Each year’s new exhibit prompts haiku writing from all who attend the event. For the first time, Haiga Adventure participated in the 2026 Bellevue Arts Fair Weekend.
Haiga Adventure History
Haiga Adventure started in 2011. Many early members were beginning haiku students who learned from online, published, and local resources how to develop haiku and images to form successful haiga. In 2020, Haiga Adventure created their first chapbook.
Haiga Avdenture is a PSSA program started by PSSA co-founder Fumiko Kimura, and her student, Vodka Sprague. Prompted by a program led by haiku poet and translator Sam Hamill, PSSA members formed Haiga Adventure to study and expand knowledge haiku and haiga and to share their art with each other and in public spaces.
